Hi everyone,
Ron and I are getting worried about getting our food storage. We've noticed food prices going up and our stake president seems very focused on encouraging the members of our stake to get our food storage. It seems the price of wheat has tripled over the past year. Our local cannery is rationing white wheat (but not red wheat). Here's an article about the soaring cost of food...

I'm not trying to be an alarmist but I just want to encourage everyone to try to stock up on some food when its on sale and maybe take a trip to the cannery to get some of the essentials.
Also I was wondering what you all eat thats cheap and if you do anything in particular to save money on food? Mom used to make us ghoulash (which I hated) and that was probably something pretty economical to make. Do you have any other cheap foods that you like?
To end this post on a lighter note, Joseph has begun insisting on being called "Robert" (its his first name if some of you don't know). Sometimes he wants to be called Robert, sometimes Joseph. When he wants to be called Joseph its because he says the name Robert "sounds like a robber."
I miss my family and I'm very glad we do this blog!
Love,
Jen

this is so hard for me. right now we are trying to build up a 3 month supply. a friend sent us their supply and it is really detailed. they did one month of breakfast lunch and dinner...stuff that might last longer....and then multiplied that by 3. then they listed every ingredient they would need for each meal. did that make sense. i can email it to you. i know we should have bought wheat last year. i guess i dont really know what i would do with wheat. or have any 'scratch' recipes.
i also hated the goulash...sorry mom!
Mom and I have recently gotten all the basics for a one years supply and are now focused on the secondary things we like to supplement our basics. Bishop Tolman, who works in the agriculture industry tells us every Sunday how high the price of wheat is going and how much of a slim, insufficient supply of wheat there is worldwide.

Brown rice is fairly inexpensive and nutritious. Use it instead of white rice. And it stores well.
Here is some authority, "Since brown rice still has the bran intact, it is a much better source of fiber. In fact a cup of brown rice has three and one-half grams of fiber while white rice has less than one gram of fiber. We all need from 15 to 25 grams of fiber in our diet every day."
